Unveiling the Best Supplements for Thinning Hair

Hair loss supplements

As a Certified Trichologist, I'm often asked about the best hair growth products for mild to moderate hair loss and for good reason. Thinning hair can be frustrating and it becomes increasingly common as we age.

It’s important to know that every hair follicle is a mini-organ. And, it takes a well-balanced diet of proteins, minerals, vitamins and amino acids to properly nourish the hair follicle in order to grow strong, healthy hair. Any lack of nutrients from fad diets to gut related issues can wreak havoc on hair health, resulting in brittle hair and hair loss.

While a healthy diet is essential for hair health, supplements can provide extra support and I often recommend them as part of a multi-therapeutic treatment plan. Below are a few of my favorites:

1. Nutrafol: A Multi-Targeted Approach to Hair Growth

One of my top recommended hair growth supplements is Nutrafol. It’s a nutraceutical, meaning it’s drug-free. It has different formulas that address the specific needs of younger women, menopausal women, postpartum women and men. I especially like that Nutrafol is “multi-targeted,” meaning it addresses a combination of issues at one time such as stress, hormonal changes, free radicals, DHT and more. It is recommended not only for individuals with shedding, hair thinning and hair loss, but also for people who want to maintain their existing healthy hair.

Benefits of Nutrafol:

  • Drug-free, natural formula

  • Addresses multiple factors affecting hair health

  • Tailored to the specific needs of different age groups and genders

2. Viviscal Pro: Backed by research and proven ingredients

Another great option is Viviscal Pro. This is one of the most studied supplements on the market and has some important ingredients that promote hair growth, such as Amino Mar Complex and Apple Stem Cell Extract. Viviscal Pro has shown promising results in clinical studies.

Benefits of Viviscal Pro:

  • Extensively researched formula

  • Contains proven ingredients for hair growth

  • Suitable for both men and women

3. Biotin: A common supplement that’s not always necessary

Many people take biotin to improve their hair health. However, most people are not biotin deficient, so it’s often not necessary. While additional biotin may not be essential for everyone, it can be recommended for individuals who truly are biotin deficient.

4. Essential Vitamins and Minerals: Don't overlook Vitamin D and Iron!

Vitamin D and iron are crucial for healthy hair, yet many people are deficient in these essential nutrients. I recommend seeing your physician annually for blood work to determine if you have any vitamin or mineral deficiencies. If you are deficient, your doctor may suggest additional supplements to help you achieve optimal hair health.

Supplements as part of a comprehensive hair growth treatment plan

It's important to remember that supplements don’t cure most hair loss problems. However, they add good support to our internal systems. I recommend taking them as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan, and always recommend consulting with your doctor before beginning anything new.

Finally, seeking professional advice from a Certified Trichologist can be helpful in creating an effective treatment plan for hair loss. As a trichologist, I perform a thorough hair and scalp analysis to ensure a plan addresses your specific needs.

Consultations can be done in-office or virtually. Click here to schedule an appointment. Early prevention is key. Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for hair loss, but a comprehensive approach can provide the best results.
